Deidre Stuffer is a graduate student in the English Department at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. When she became interested in the digital humanities, she decided to take a few computer science courses to learn how to create interesting ways to interrogate and visualize large sets of data. She has since become a collaborator on the Visualizing English Print Project which uses 61,000 early printed texts as its corpora of humanist data. Deidre has the advantage of being able to talk to both humanists and computer scientists, to bridge that “communication gap” that sometimes occurs when working on collaborative digital projects. As the VEP project winds up, she talks to us about her project, her experiences working as a digital humanist, and important lessons she has learned along the way.
